AI Camera Error on New York Buses Leads to 3,800 Wrong Parking Fines (Instagram @mta)
In New York, USA, the installation of cameras with artificial intelligence on some buses to monitor parking and ensure that bus lanes remain clear led to an error.
The cameras ended up issuing around 3,800 incorrect parking fines, including nearly 900 for vehicles that were legally parked.
This happened because the cameras were not properly programmed for specific routes, leading to errors in identifying parked cars.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) explained that on some routes, the cameras confused parked cars with vehicles in violation, and on others, fines were issued in areas where enforcement had not yet started. As a result, the city refunded the drivers who paid the fines and corrected the software error.
Despite the incident, the MTA plans to expand the use of AI cameras. By the end of 2024, more than 1,020 buses will be equipped with this technology, with plans to install even more in other vehicles.
The technology has proven effective in catching violations and is helping the city keep buses running on time, while also generating revenue from fines.
